I found very uncomfortable to hold the AE-L/AF-L to get
the exposure lock trick done.But if you go to
Custom Settings > Timers/AE-Lock you'll find an option
called Shutter-release button AE-L. By default is ON,
and that makes the "Hold to lock exposure" thing.. but if you
turn that OFF, the button works as a toggle, that means press it
once for lock, and press again to unlock.

What exactly do you press when recording?

"D90 movie exposure lock: Menu / Custom Settings/ Controls / AE-L/AF-L for MB-D80/ Set to “hold”
- press when recording to set exposure lock"

Thanks a lot! I found what you were describing, though my menu was slightly different. The menu didn't have the "for MB-D80" in the f portion of custom controls. I went to custom/controls/Assign AE-L/AF-L button/AE lock (hold). Thanks very much for sending me in the right direction. Now I hit the button once and it sticks :)
